Late autumn injuries lurk beneath the surface of leaves

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2025 | Premises Liability |

Piles of colorful autumn leaves are a sure sign of the season, but those same lovely leaves can create hazards for people who are walking, riding or driving. Some people think that the worst danger they can suffer from fallen leaves is the aching back from sweeping up pile after pile of them.

But, in reality, leaves can create dangerous circumstances for others. In some cases, homeowners or property owners or managers could face liability for failing to mitigate the damage from the fallen leaves. Learn more below.

How hazards arise

Look at the carpet of leaves spread across your lawn. While you may remember to step wide of the spot where the six-inch hole is while outdoors, it’s doubtful that your lawn service personnel are so aware. Allowing hazards to exist on your property without repairing or fixing them leaves you open to lawsuits for premises liability.

Do an autumn safety check

Are those gutters clogged with leaves? Maybe there are already problems with the gutter itself — could that downspout break free and fall down onto a passerby below? Each spring and autumn, property owners should take a stroll around their lots and make repairs where and when needed.

If you suffer serious injuries

No one wants to sue a neighbor or family member or friend. But filing a claim for damages to cover the expenses of treating a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or serious broken limb may be necessary to get the medical care you need and cover your bills while you mend.
