Loose objects can become projectiles during a crash

On Behalf of | May 21, 2025 | Car Accidents |

The impact that occurs during a crash can cause objects within the vehicle to shift. In some cases, the jolt is so severe that those objects may become airborne. Because of this, items like cellphones, water bottles and handbags that most people don’t think of securing can become dangerous projectiles.

The danger from these items isn’t insignificant. If a vehicle is moving at 30 miles per hour, an object that weighs only one pound can hit someone with the force of a 30-pound projectile

Significant danger of eye injuries

One of the primary dangers of smaller objects flying around a vehicle during a crash is one of them striking a person’s eyes. Sharp or pointed objects may cause piercing injuries to the eye. This can include retinal damage or corneal abrasions that can result in permanent vision loss.

Another significant hazard comes when shattered plastic, broken glass or exposed metal go flying. Even softer objects, like toys or pillows, can cause blunt force trauma if they strike the face with enough velocity.  This can lead to damage to the eyes and face, such as a broken nose or fractured cheekbone.

Nobody knows when a negligent driver will crash into them. A wreck can lead to devastating injuries that are costly. Those victims may choose to seek compensation, but this must be done quickly because of time limits built into law. Because these cases can be complex, they should work with someone familiar with these matters. This gives the victim a chance to focus on healing while the legal aspects of the case are taken care of.
