Brain injuries can get more serious with time

You get into a car accident and suffer a head injury, but it doesn’t seem that serious. Maybe you have a mild headache as you’re talking to the paramedics. You just assume that you need to go home, get some rest, and maybe take painkillers like Tylenol or another over-the-counter medication.

But if you don’t go to the hospital and get checked out by a doctor, your brain injury could get worse. It may actually be far more serious than you realize. This is why it is important to seek medical attention after a crash, as getting a professional opinion on your injuries could protect you from catastrophic ramifications.

A brain hemorrhage

The problem is that the brain injury may still be developing if there is bleeding in the brain. When a blood vessel bursts, it’s known as a brain hemorrhage. When there is bleeding between brain tissues, it may be called a subdural hematoma.

Both of these injuries are very dangerous for two reasons. For one thing, excessive bleeding increases the pressure on the brain. There’s a finite amount of space in the skull, so even a small amount of bleeding could lead to serious symptoms or even death.

Additionally, because the broken blood vessels are not bringing blood to the correct parts of the brain, the oxygen flow can decrease dramatically. This could also lead to cell death and related symptoms.

Seeking compensation

If you have such a significant brain injury, the medical treatment you require could be expensive. Make sure you know how to seek financial compensation for those medical bills and other costs related to the accident, such as pain and suffering or lost wages.
