How to drive safely in the rain

The Seattle area certainly has a great deal of wet, rainy weather. As a result, many drivers have become accustomed to maneuvering on slick roads. However, car accidents can still happen even when taking precautions. These are some tips for driving safely in the rain.

Slow down and give extra space

One of the biggest mistakes leading to auto accidents in the rain is that drivers underestimate their risk and travel too fast. To avoid disaster, slow down; a few miles per hour under the legal speed limit is appropriate. It can help you come to a stop when necessary and avoid skidding. Also, give even more space between your vehicle and the one ahead.

Use the right tires

Your tires can make all the difference in whether or not you get into an accident while driving in the rain. If they are worn out, it’s time to get new ones. Tires designed for rain or even all weather conditions with good traction can help you travel safely when the pavement is wet and slick.

Avoid hydroplaning

Hydroplaning sometimes happens to drivers in heavy rainfall; it causes your vehicle to lose traction with the road as it coasts on top of water. If you notice your vehicle is doing this, ease your foot off the gas pedal and avoid hitting the brakes. This will allow your car to gradually slow down until you’re out of the puddle so that you can regain control.

Avoid using your bright lights

It might seem wise to use your bright headlights in the rain, but the opposite is true; high beams can cause visibility issues for you and other drivers. Use your regular headlights to see and be seen.

The potential dangers of driving in the rain are often overlooked. These tips can help keep you and others safe.
