Supporting your teen after an accident

If you have children and live in Washington, there will likely be a time when they take to the roads and start driving. Although you can talk to your teenager about ways to stay safe, an accident could still occur. Here are a few tips to keep in mind that can make the situation less stressful.

Support

After auto accidents happen, one of the things that you can do as a parent is to offer support for your teen. Let them know you’re not angry and understand that mistakes happen. Your teen should feel as though they can ask questions about what to do after the accident and get back on the road safely when they are ready.

Reports

Once it’s safe to do so, contact the police department so that a police report can be filed. Explain to your teen that this can take place as soon as an accident occurs if there are no injuries and that witnesses can sometimes call for help as well. Show your teen the details of the report and what information they should and should not provide if legal help might be needed.

Insurance

One of the people to call is your insurance agent. If possible, your teen can call the company soon after the accident occurs so that details are fresh in their mind. The policy number, description of the vehicles involved, and any information about the other driver can be given to the agent so that a claim can be filed.

An accident can be a frightening experience for anyone. If your teen is involved in an accident, they should know they can rely on your guidance and expertise to get through the situation.
