Car accidents, falls and other incidents can result in brain injuries to Washington residents. Although some of these injuries may be mild, others can be more serious and lead to additional problems. These are some of the common complications and medical problems stemming from them.

Spasticity

Spasticity is a common complication of brain injuries. It is characterized by difficulty moving certain parts of the body as the muscles and nerves become stiff. This is a painful condition that can affect a person’s daily life and activities. Fortunately, there are various treatments available that can soften the muscles, allowing for normal range of motion.

Infections

If the injury is caused by an object penetrating the skull and brain, it can cause significant damage to meninges and lead to infection. Specifically, the person can suffer from meningitis, which could be deadly if not promptly treated. Other potential complications include sepsis, which can lead to multiple organ failure and death.

Respiratory problems

Severe brain injuries can impact a person’s ability to breathe normally. When the amount of air circulating inside the body is insufficient, it could cause a lack of oxygen to the brain. Respiratory complications can lead to brain damage or even death.

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism

Some traumatic brain injuries can cause one or more blood clots in large veins, which is known as deep vein thrombosis. Pulmonary embolism can follow due to a blockage in an artery in the lungs. In this situation, the person’s risk of death significantly increases.

Hypertension

Although it’s one of the rarer complications, some people who suffer brain injuries can develop hypertension. This occurs when the part of the brain that controls blood pressure is affected.

Brain injuries are among the most serious. Medical care might be able to prevent these complications.
